Chiara Mim Bartali Illustrator from Volterra, Italy

Chiara was born in Volterra in 1992. She always liked drawing and painting and after high school she decided to go to the "Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera", a state-run tertiary public academy of fine arts in Milan. There she graduated in stage design. She took a master's degree in illustration and concept art in Florence.

During the Florence years she discovered illustrated books, and her dream became writing and drawing books for children and adults. She really likes stuyding and thanks to this, her drawing style and techniques are always changing. She loves history, mythology, fantasy and sociology, and she wishes to tell stories that could change people's minds, shake the soul, and provoke emotions. She draws illustrations with digital techniques, but she also likes traditional art (like painting in oil).

We had this interview with Chiara in 2023.

What brought you to your art?

There is not a precise answer. I have always wanted to be an artist or to work in that world. My art is the way to be myself, and with drawing I'm able to tell what I want, and to feel free.

How did you get the opportunity to participate in Cornelia's 'Artists in Residence Program’?

I was visiting my parents and friends when my mum talked to me about Cornelia and an exhibition she organised for her artists. Thanks to some common friends, I met Cornelia. I immediately fell in love with her Fraggina project and I really wanted to take part in it.

How did you like your time at Fraggina? Did you find inspiration there?

Ooohh, I found much inspiration in Fraggina! Talking with the other artists and getting good advice from Cornelia has been very precious for me. Staying in that beautiful place with the Tuscan hills around, is peaceful. I had the opportunity to explore my art style, to free my mind and creativity.

What did you take home from there?

I took home the awareness that I can do everything I want, that my opportunities are infinite like the hills and the sky.
